I was recently reminded of the incredible power we have within ourselves to impact others. This power is the power of believing in someone else. It may not seem like much to those who possess an overabundance of self-confidence, but to the rest of us, if you believe in us, it could literally change the course of our lives. It's that significant.
What often happens, especially as people are growing, is that they have dreams and hopes and desires but are unsure whether it's possible for them to achieve a certain goal or be a certain kind of person. When someone comes along who's further along on the journey, who's been where you're trying to get to, and says that they believe you can do it too, THAT is incredibly powerful. It's so powerful that I have snapshot memories - pictures in my mind - of times when people have done this for me.
One was when I wanted to join the Marine Corps. I was skinny and timid. I had lunch with someone who was a Marine and they told me they thought I could do it. From that point on, I believed I could. And I did.
Another time was while I was in college. During my freshman year a great professor showed an interest in me and took time for me. One day during a visit to his office, he told me he could see me earning a doctoral degree one day. There was a time I didn't even want to go to college much less earn a doctorate, but from that point on I believed I could. And I will.
When I was considering the chaplaincy, I had an interview with my endorser for my denomination. He was a retired chaplain, Army Ranger, the real deal kind of guy - someone I looked up to. He told me after the interview that he thought I could become a great chaplain. From that point on I believed I could. I endeavor to live up to his belief in me everyday.
Jesus said things to his disciples like "you haven't chosen me, I have chosen you," and "you will do even greater things." Pretty motivating words coming from the Son of God.
So whether you're a parent, spouse, friend, or any kind of leader, please realize the power of your words to change the life of someone...simply by believing in them. Why not tell someone today?
What powerful words, my son. And just as an encouraging word from someone can erge one forward, so are the words of your blog. You thoughts are such an encouragement to us along the christiam walk (Pastor Eric). I join others and yourself as you press on to your doctorate. Mother and I could not be prouder of you boys and your accomplishment as sons, husbands, fathers, pastors,(Chaplin) & (Store Manager). I often say to myself "WHY ME LORD" and then I awaken from the dream of my life and say, THANK YOU LORD.......... D A D
